How to Prepare for Newborn Sleep While You’re Still Pregnant

Updated: Jul 23

Most expecting parents prepare for birth - but not for baby sleep.

And yet, sleep deprivation is one of the biggest challenges new parents face in the early weeks.

The good news? You can absolutely prepare for baby sleep before your baby arrives. In fact, it’s one of the kindest things you can do for your future self.

At The Peaceful Sleep Company, we support families from pregnancy onward with gentle, practical baby sleep preparation. Here’s how to begin:

1. Understand What’s Normal for Newborn Sleep

Your newborn won’t sleep through the night - and they’re not meant to. But knowing the range of normal (feeding needs and how sleep develops) helps you feel calm and confident when it happens.

2. Set Up a Sleep-Friendly Environment

Before your baby arrives, create a sleep space that supports rest: blackout blinds, white noise, 16 - 20 degree room temperature and an amber night light can make a big difference for both of you.

3. Learn the Difference Between Holistic Sleep & Sleep Training

You don’t need to “train” your baby. Holistic sleep shaping is about building gentle foundations that support healthy sleep from day one. It’s responsive, nurturing, and effective. Understanding your baby as a whole rather than sleep in isolation.

4. Think about Your “Sleep Values” Before Baby Arrives

Every family has different hopes, beliefs, and boundaries around sleep. Before your baby arrives, take time to reflect on what matters to you - How do you feel about routines, shared sleep, or asking for help?

When you’re clear on your sleep values ahead of time, it’s easier to make confident decisions later.

5. Get on the Same Page as Your Partner or Support Network

Planning for night feeds, rest breaks, and expectations together avoids tension later. Everyone benefits when sleep plans are made proactively, not reactively.
